I. About the Orchestra
The Sichuan Symphony Orchestra (The Sichuan Orchestra of China) is a prestigious and professional orchestra situated in China's immense Sichuan province. It is that region's principal orchestra and is generously supported by the Sichuan Provincial Government through long-term funding. Renowned for its unique artistic resources, the orchestra has rapidly become one of China's leading symphony orchestras.
The Sichuan Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to enriching China's diverse cultural landscape and introducing a unique perspective of classical music to the world through its programming and activities. The orchestra collaborates with both Chinese and international conductors and soloists, performing programs that encompass the standard symphonic repertoire, music tailor-made for community outreach, state functions, as well as themed concerts featuring music from movies, animated films and video games..
In recent years, the orchestra has collaborated with numerous Chinese as well as international conductors and soloists, including Zhang Guoyong, Lin Daye, Huang Yi, Shinik Hahm, Leonid Korchmar, Seong-Jin Cho, Alexandra Dariescu, Anna Tsybuleva, Ning Feng ,Chen Xi, Mikhail Simonyan, Liya Petrova, Andrey Baranov, Mei Diyang, Qin Li-Wei, Camille Thomas, Zeng Yun, Timur Martynov, Olivier Doise, and Xie Ming ,among others. The orchestra performs an annual symphonic season between the months of September and July.
II. About the city of Chengdu
The Sichuan Symphony Orchestra is located in the capital city of Chengdu - known famously as home to the Giant Panda. Widely known as the “Land of Abundance”, Chengdu is a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage. It is one of the most important and largest metropolises in China - with a vivid mix of contemporary and traditional architecture, a population of over 20 million and a thriving GDP. Chengdu is also officially recognized by UNESCO as a city of gastronomy, and enjoys the reputation as being one of China's most liveable cities.
III. About the Orchestra's Artistic Director & Chief Conductor
One of Asia’s most well-known and popular conductors, the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra’s Artistic Director & Chief Conductor Darrell Ang shot into the international spotlight when he took all three top prizes at the prestigious 50th Besançon International Conducting Competition: the Grand Prize, Audience Prize, and Orchestra Prize, alongside his other competition wins at the 9th Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition and the 8th Arturo Toscanini International Conducting Competition. Additional accolades include France’s "Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres" (Knighthood of Arts & Letters) in 2015, as well as a GRAMMY nomination for his recording of music by Chinese composers Zhou Long and Chen Yi - one of many award-winning titles in his extensive discography for NAXOS Records. Under his artistic leadership, the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra has risen to the top rank of China’s symphony orchestras, and is a major proponent of contemporary Chinese music. Darrell Ang is also a regular guest with the world's great symphony orchestras and opera houses - among them, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra of London, Orchestra Philharmonique de Radio France, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, The Mariinsky Theatre and the San Francisco Opera,and the outstanding symphony orchestras of China Hong Kong, China Taiwan and mainland China.
IV. Audition Information
The Sichuan Symphony Orchestra invites applicants for the following positions:
Violin (Section Principal, Associate Principal or Tutti)
Viola (Associate Principal, Assistant Principal or Tutti)
Cello (Section Principal, Associate Principal or Tutti)
Double Bass (Section Principal, Associate Principal or Tutti)
Oboe (Section Principal, Assistant Principal or Tutti)
Clarinet (Assistant Principal or Tutti)
Bassoon (Section Principal, Associate Principal or Tutti)
Horn (Co-Principal High Horn or Tutti)
Trumpet (Section Principal, Associate Principal or Tutti)
Trombone (Principal, Associate Principal or Tutti)
Tuba
Timpani (Principal)
Percussion (Tutti or Associate Principal)
V. Audition Requirements
1. Applicants should possess a minimum of a Bachelor of Music degree;
2. Applicants should possess a good professional attitude and enjoy working in a team environment;
3. Applicants should be in good health and possess an authorised non-criminal record;
4. Applicants should be fluent in English for rehearsal and communication purposes;
5. Applicants with relevant work experience will be prioritized.
VI. Salary and Benefits
1. Annual salary ranging from ¥120,000 - ¥180,000 and above (before tax), up to ¥300,000;
2. Local social insurance;
3. Paid annual leave (Lunar New Year, Summer break and Public Holidays) at no less than 4 weeks each year;
4. Housing subsidies for non-local residents will be provided.
